Fictional Firearms Contest Young Gunsliger Award by cityofthesouth Fictional Firearms Contest Young Gunsliger Award by cityofthesouth
Well congrats to the Young Gunslinger. This is the drawing I've created based on the winner's design, designated the AR-17. I'll get a print made and put in the mail as soon as I can. After talking with the creator I changed quite a few things and I think I like it better now. I put a rubber texture on the grip, fixed the magazine to more closely resemble the original design and put in the integral suppressor. What a beast!

Not long. Drawings like this are pretty quick. There is probably only 4 or 5 hours total in them.

Cool. Something like this would take ages for me.

It's all in the technique I use. With a few easy tricks, guns are really easy to do, especially when you do "technical" type drawings like this with simple lighting and side profile.

What program do you use for these? Flash has been good, but limiting as far as color and shading go

Illustrator for the lines and Photoshop for the color. I have a kinda-sorta tutorial in my gallery. It needs to be more in depth but it covers the basics.

Well, Flash is amazing for line-art, the "snap" function is incredibly useful. I've tried coloring with Photoshop, but I can't figure out how to shade worth a damn

With guns my favorite feature is to take your brush, click, and then shift click somewhere else. This gives you a perfectly straight line. If you create flats (or just have line art is good enough) you can color outside the lines, then make a selection using your lines and delete everything outside. It's really simple. It's not full on realism, but that's not what I'm going for.

Flash lets you use a line tool that actually works, lines automatically connect when you drag them close enough, and you make curves by using the pointer to drag straight lines into whatever shape you like. You can delete lines easily, and colored shapes stay the same ([link]) The Layer system is also useful. But the coloring is crap, this is an excellent example of how you can get great lines, but the colors look flat and shitty: [link]

Well I think there are other options besides Photoshop for rendering that will cost you a lot less. Basically all I require is a brush tool, layers and something like the magic wand tool. You can do a lot with just those things. It is nice to have layer styles, effects and filters, but really I could make due without them. I use them in every drawing though. I am sure Gimp has these features. Plus, Painter has them as well and it is pretty affordable. Of course it's all about technique. I could do these drawings 100 different ways to get different results, but I'm looking for quick and fun little projects and that's why I use my technique.

I've got every Adobe product known to man, I just don't understand how to use any of the features beyond the paint bucket

OH! Well learning the things you need to do this kind of stuff is a cake walk. There are tutorials everywhere. I want to get around to making a better tutorial but I doubt I'm going to find the time soon.
