So I took some liberties with the design after a conversation with the designer. It also occurred to me while drawing that a crazy modular gun would be able to change to longer OAL cartridges so I made the trigger group separate just to indicate that it is a full on Lego gun. I gave it a heavier barrel and a fictional magazine just to make it even a little bit more modern. I wanted more real estate on the hand guard for user-mounted rails as well as grip surface. I concluded that the dust cover - which is not rigid enough on an AK to mount optics - would slide onto the weapon via internal rails and then be secured with the rear pin. The hand guard could then be polymer and also removable or aluminum and rigid. I also used this as an opportunity to keep designing a different selector style. I wanted to make it so that the user could rest his/her thumb on it while shooting and move it back to safe without changing grip - which tends to happen on AR-style selector switches.
oh, and did I mention that you should check my journal?
